Let me be honest. I lost Bruno once. For 40 minutes that felt like 4 years.
We were at my uncle’s farm. Gate was open for 2 minutes. Bruno, my Labrador, saw a stray dog and ran. I shouted, he didn’t listen. He disappeared in fields. My heart stopped.
We found him after 40 minutes, hiding near canal, scared. That day I came home and ordered a GPS tracker same night. But when I saw prices, I got second shock. $100 for tracker plus $10 every month forever? Like a mobile recharge for dog?
I didn’t want monthly fees. I already pay for my own phone, WiFi, Netflix. I didn’t want another bill for dog. So I spent 2 weeks researching trackers with NO monthly fees. Tried 2 of them myself, and asked 3 friends who use different ones.
So this is real review, not Amazon copy-paste. If you don’t want to pay monthly, this is for you.
First, The Truth No One Tells You About “No Monthly Fee” Trackers
There are 2 types of trackers, and this is important:
- True GPS Tracker with SIM card: Uses mobile signal like your phone, tracks anywhere in city, even 10km away. But these ALWAYS have monthly fee because SIM needs recharge. Like Fi, Jiobit, Tractive. Good but monthly bill.
- Bluetooth Tracker with No Fee: Like AirTag, Tile, Samsung SmartTag. No SIM, no monthly fee. Works with community network – if any iPhone or Samsung phone passes near your dog, it updates location. Range is 100-200 feet direct, but in city with many phones, it works almost like GPS. And no monthly fee, ever.
If you live in a big city or town where many people have iPhones, Bluetooth trackers work amazing and no fee. If you live in jungle, farm with no people, you need SIM GPS and you have to pay monthly. That’s truth.
I live in city, so I went with no monthly fee. And it works perfect for me.
Top 5 No Monthly Fee Trackers – What I Tried and What Friends Tried
1. Apple AirTag – My Number One, I Use This Now
- Price: $29 for tag + $10 for dog collar holder = $39 total. No monthly fee ever.
This is what I have on Bruno’s collar for last 9 months.
- How it works: No SIM. It uses every iPhone in the world as tracker. If your dog is lost and any stranger with iPhone walks within 50 feet of him, you get location on your iPhone. In city, there are iPhones everywhere, so location updates every 2-3 minutes.
- My real experience: Bruno once ran 1km to market. I opened Find My app, saw his location at chai shop. Went there, he was sitting there getting biscuits from shopkeeper. Location was accurate to 10 feet. Battery lasts 1 year, replaceable coin battery Rs. 300.
- Pros: No monthly fee ever, tiny and light (11 grams), waterproof, battery 1 year, super accurate in city.
- Cons: You need iPhone. If you have Android, not as good. In empty fields with no people, no iPhones, no update. And it doesn’t do live tracking every second, it updates every few minutes.
- Best for: City dogs, daily walks, if you have iPhone. This is 90% of people.
2. Samsung SmartTag2 – Best for Samsung Users
- Price: $30 + $10 holder = $40 total. No monthly fee.
My friend Ali has this for his German Shepherd. He has Samsung phone.
- How it works: Same as AirTag but uses Samsung phones network. And this one is actually better for dogs because it has IP67 waterproof and has a big hole so you can tie directly, no extra holder needed sometimes.
Ali said battery lasts 6-8 months, and it has a cool feature – if you press button on tag, your phone rings, so you can find dog in house. And it works with SmartThings app.
- Pros: No fee, waterproof, works with Samsung network which is also huge in Pakistan/India, battery long, has lost mode.
- Cons: Need Samsung phone. If you have iPhone, don’t buy. And same – needs people around for location, not true GPS in empty areas.
- Best for: Samsung Android users. If you have Samsung, this is better than AirTag.
3. Tile Mate / Tile Sticker – Best for Android Users Who Don’t Have Samsung
- Price: $25 for Tile Mate, $35 for Sticker version. No monthly fee.
My cousin in Lahore uses Tile Mate for his Beagle. He has OnePlus phone, so no AirTag, no SmartTag.
Tile uses its own network plus Amazon Alexa and Life360 phones. Network is smaller than Apple/Samsung but still works in big cities.
He said range is 250 feet Bluetooth, battery 1 year for Mate, 3 years for Sticker (sticker you can stick directly on collar, super small). App shows last location.
- Pros: No monthly fee, works with any Android or iPhone, Sticker version is tiny and perfect for small dogs/cats, cheap.
- Cons: Network smaller than Apple, so location updates slower if area not crowded. Accuracy 20-30 feet, not as good as AirTag in city. But still works.
- Best for: Android users with no Samsung, small dogs where you want tiny tracker.
4. Cube GPS Tracker – The Only True GPS With No Monthly Fee (But With Catch)
- Price: $50 for device. No monthly fee but limited.
This one is interesting. My friend from Islamabad ordered this. It says true GPS with no monthly fee because it uses GPS but connects via Bluetooth to your phone for data, not SIM. So if dog is within 2 miles with clear sky, you get GPS location without any phone network.
But catch – if dog goes far away out of Bluetooth range (like 1000 feet), it will only show last location where you were near. To get live tracking far away, you need to pay for premium.
He used it on farm, said within farm it’s great, live tracking. But when dog ran to village 2km away, it lost signal.
- Pros: True GPS chip, no SIM, no monthly fee for basic, waterproof.
- Cons: Not truly unlimited range without fee, battery only 2 weeks, bigger and heavier than AirTag.
- Best for: People who live on big farm/house and want to track dog within property only, no monthly fee.
5. Garmin Astro / Garmin GPS Dog Collar – For Hunters and No-Fee True GPS
- Price: $300-$600. No monthly fee ever. Expensive but beast.
Okay this is not for normal pet parents. This is for hunters, working dogs, people in mountains. My uncle has it for his hunting dogs.
This is true GPS + radio, no SIM, no phone network needed, no monthly fee ever. Range 9km in open area. Shows exact live location every 2 seconds on Garmin hand device. Battery 20-40 hours.
It’s military grade. Waterproof, shockproof.
But price is crazy, and you need to carry separate Garmin remote. Not for city Labrador.
- Pros: No monthly fee, true GPS, works even in jungle with zero phones, live tracking every second, 9km range.
- Cons: Very expensive, big and heavy for small dogs, need separate device, overkill for city.
- Best for: Hunters, farmers, people in remote areas where no iPhones exist.
Which One Should You Buy? My Honest Recommendation
Don’t overthink.
- If you have iPhone and live in city/town: Buy Apple AirTag + good waterproof holder. Total $39, no monthly fee. This is what 80% of people should buy. This is what I use and I sleep peacefully now.
- If you have Samsung: Buy Samsung SmartTag2. Same logic.
- If you have any other Android: Buy Tile Sticker. Tiny, cheap, no fee.
- If you live on farm with no people around and need true GPS: You HAVE to pay monthly fee, sorry. Go for Tractive or Fi or Jiobit. No monthly fee trackers won’t work in empty fields. Or if you have big budget, buy Garmin.
I bought AirTag because Bruno is city dog. One time battery finished after 11 months, I changed coin battery myself in 10 seconds.https://petkingdom.site/best-dog-food-sensitive-stomach-allergies/
What Holder To Buy – Important!
AirTag and Tile are not dog proof by themselves. You need holder.
Don’t buy cheap silicone holder that hangs and swings. Dog will chew it.
Buy hard plastic holder that screws tight on collar and is waterproof. I bought Belkin AirTag holder for dog collar, $12, been solid for 9 months. Make sure holder doesn’t make sound (some metal holders jingle and irritate dog).
And attach to harness or collar tightly, not loose.
FAQs – What I Asked Before Buying
Do AirTag and SmartTag track live like in movies?
No, not every second. AirTag updates every 1-3 minutes when near any iPhone. For me that’s enough. If your dog is running fast, you will see location jumping every few minutes, not smooth line. True live every second tracking only comes with SIM trackers that have monthly fee.
Will AirTag work if my dog goes to village with no people?
No. If no iPhones pass near, no location update. You will see last location where he was near people. So if you live in very remote area with no people, no monthly fee tracker is risky. You need SIM tracker with monthly fee. But in any town or city with people, it works great.
Is AirTag safe for dogs? Does it have radiation?
Yes, safe. It’s Bluetooth low energy, same as your wireless earphones. No SIM radiation. My vet said it’s safe, lighter than most ID tags. Just make sure dog can’t chew and swallow it, use good holder.
How long does battery last? Do I need to charge daily?
No charging. AirTag coin battery lasts 10-12 months. SmartTag2 lasts 6-10 months. Tile Sticker lasts 3 years. You get notification on phone when battery low. Replace coin battery for $1. Much better than GPS trackers with SIM that need charging every 2-3 days.
Can someone track me using AirTag on my dog?
Apple has safety feature. If unknown AirTag is following someone, their iPhone alerts them. And AirTag beeps if away from owner for 8 hours. So safe. And you can set it to lost mode so if someone finds your dog and taps AirTag with phone, they see your number.
After losing Bruno once, I never go for walk without tracker now. Even in home garden, AirTag is on. No monthly fee, no tension of recharge, just put and forget for a year. That 40 minutes of panic was enough for lifetime.
