Let me tell you about my dog Bruno’s stomach. This Labrador can eat a whole sofa and still ask for food, but give him a little bit of chicken curry or cheap kibble and his stomach goes crazy. I’m talking 3 AM wake up, watery poop all over balcony, vomiting, and that gurgling sound like a washing machine in his belly.
I thought he was just greedy. My vet said “No, he has sensitive stomach plus chicken allergy.” I was shocked. A dog allergic to chicken? But yes, it’s super common.
So for last one year, I have tried almost every food, from expensive imported to local. I wasted money, cleaned a lot of poop, and finally found what actually works. And I asked my vet which food he actually recommends to allergy dogs, not what companies pay him to sell.
If your dog has loose poop often, vomits, scratches a lot, licks paws, has red ears, or has gas that can clear a room – this article is for you.
How I Knew It Was Allergy + Sensitive Stomach, Not Just Bad Food
This is what my vet told me to check, and Bruno had all of them:
- Poop is always soft, not solid: Not diarrhea everyday, but never solid. Like soft-serve ice cream. And 3-4 times a day.
- Gas that is DEADLY: Bruno’s gas was so bad we had to open windows. Vet said sensitive stomach dogs don’t digest food properly, so gas.
- Vomiting yellow bile in morning: Empty stomach vomit 2-3 times a week.
- Scratching and paw licking: This is allergy part. Bruno would lick his paws for 20 minutes, scratch ears till red. I thought it was ticks. No ticks. Vet said food allergy shows on skin, not stomach.
- Ear infections again and again: Bruno got ear infection 3 times in 4 months. Vet said dogs with food allergy get red, smelly ears often.
If your dog has 2-3 of these, it’s not normal. It’s sensitive stomach + allergy.
What Actually Causes It? Vet Explained in Simple Words
Vet said 2 things:
- Sensitive stomach: Means his gut is weak. Like some humans can’t eat spicy food. He can’t handle too much fat, too much spice, too many changes, cheap fillers like corn and soy.
- Allergy: Means his immune system thinks some protein is enemy. For dogs, biggest enemies are:
- Chicken (yes, number 1 allergy)
- Beef
- Dairy (milk, cheese, curd in large amount)
- Wheat / Gluten
- Eggs (for some dogs)
Bruno turned out to be allergic to chicken. The irony – I was giving him boiled chicken everyday thinking I’m giving healthy food.https://petkingdom.site/best-gps-dog-trackers-no-monthly-fees/
Best Dog Foods That Actually Worked For Us – Vet Recommended
I will not give you 20 options like Google. I will give you 4 types that vets actually recommend and what worked for Bruno.
1. Limited Ingredient Diet (LID) – This Saved Bruno
This is what my vet said first: “Go simple.”
Limited ingredient means food has only ONE protein and ONE carb. Not 5 meats mixed.
Like: Salmon + Potato. Or Lamb + Rice. Or Duck + Pea.
- Why it works: If you give only one protein, you know exactly what suits. If dog reacts, you know it’s that protein.
- What we use: Salmon and Rice formula. Brands like Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach (Salmon), or Acana Singles (Lamb + Apple), or Royal Canin Hypoallergenic.
Bruno eats Purina Pro Plan Sensitive – Salmon & Rice. In Pakistan it’s expensive, Rs. 12,000 for bag, but his poop became solid in 5 days. First time in months. I cried.
If your dog has both stomach and skin issues, start with Salmon or Lamb. Avoid chicken completely for 2 months to test.
2. Hydrolyzed Protein Diet – For Severe Allergies
If your dog scratches like crazy, has blood in poop, or allergy test is very bad, vet gives this.
Hydrolyzed means protein is broken into tiny pieces so tiny that immune system can’t recognize it. So body doesn’t react.
- Brands: Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein, Hill’s z/d, Purina HA.
It’s super expensive and tastes bad (Bruno didn’t like it much), but for severe allergy dogs it’s like medicine. Vet said use for 2-3 months to calm gut, then slowly switch to limited ingredient.
My cousin’s German Shepherd with bloody poop was fixed with Royal Canin HP for 3 months.
3. Grain-Free BUT Only If Vet Says – Don’t Follow Trend Blindly
Everyone says grain-free is best. Vet said no.
Grain-free is only needed if dog is allergic to wheat. Most dogs are allergic to chicken or beef, not grain. Grain-free foods replace grain with pea and potato, which for some dogs causes heart issues if given long term.
So unless vet did test and said wheat allergy, don’t pick grain-free just because Instagram says. Pick grain-inclusive but with easy grain like rice or oatmeal. Rice is easiest to digest.
Bruno eats rice-based food, not grain-free, and he’s perfect now.
4. Homemade Simple Diet – For Short Time, Not Forever
Vet gave us a temporary home diet when Bruno had bad diarrhea for 3 days:
- Boiled white rice + boiled boneless white fish (or lean mutton) + little pumpkin.
- No oil, no salt, no chicken, no milk.
Just this for 3 days, then slowly mix kibble.
It works like khichdi for humans when stomach is upset. Soothes gut.
But vet said don’t give only homemade for months without vet recipe, because you will miss calcium and vitamins and dog will get weak bones.
What I Stopped Giving – This Was Hard
- Chicken: Even though everyone says chicken is best for dogs, for allergy dogs it’s worst. I stopped completely for 2 months. Now I can give little, but not daily.
- Cheap biscuits and treats: Those colorful dog biscuits from pet shop – full of chicken, wheat, and artificial color. They were causing half of Bruno’s gas. Now I give only single ingredient treats – like dried fish or lamb treats, or just small piece of apple.
- Milk and roti: My mom used to give milk roti daily. Vet said dogs are lactose intolerant, milk causes gas and loose poop. Roti wheat causes allergy in some. Stopped both.
- Table scraps / Salan: Oily curry, spices, onion garlic – all poison for sensitive stomach. Now Bruno gets nothing from our plate. Hard, but needed.
- Changing food every week: I used to change brand every month thinking variety is good. Vet said sensitive dogs need same food daily for at least 2 months to let gut settle. No variety, same boring food is actually good for them.
How To Switch Food Without Destroying Stomach – The Method That Works
I made this mistake. I changed from Royal Canin to Acana in one day. Bruno had watery poop for 5 days.
Vet taught me 7-day rule:
- Day 1-2: 75% old food, 25% new food
- Day 3-4: 50% old, 50% new
- Day 5-6: 25% old, 75% new
- Day 7: 100% new
Slow. Always slow. Sensitive stomach dogs need time.
And add 1 spoon pumpkin puree (kaddu) or curd (if milk allergy not there) for first week. It helps digestion.
What Finally Worked For Bruno – My Current Routine
This is vet approved and we have been stable for 8 months:
- Morning: Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach – Salmon + Rice formula (1.5 cup) + 1 spoon pumpkin puree. No mixing.
- Evening: Same kibble (1.5 cup) + little warm water + 2-3 small pieces of boiled white fish as topper.
- Treats: Only single ingredient – dried lamb or apple slices. No chicken treats.
- No: Milk, roti, chicken, beef, table scraps, cheap biscuits.
Result: Poop is solid, once in morning, once evening. No 3 AM gas. No paw licking. Ears clean. And he still gets excited for food.
Cost is more, but vet bills are now zero. Earlier I was paying Rs. 3,000 every month for diarrhea and ear medicine.
FAQs – The Questions I Asked Vet While Cleaning Poop
How do I know if it’s chicken allergy or just sensitive stomach?
Vet did simple test – elimination diet. Remove chicken completely for 8 weeks. Only give novel protein like salmon or lamb. If scratching stops and poop becomes solid, it’s chicken allergy. For Bruno, in 2 weeks scratching reduced, in 5 days poop solid. So chicken was enemy. You have to try 8 weeks strictly, no cheating with chicken treats.
Is curd good or bad for sensitive stomach?
Small amount is good, large amount bad. One spoon curd has probiotics, helps digestion. But one katori milk or curd has too much lactose and causes gas. So if your dog not allergic to dairy, give 1 spoon curd with food, not a bowl. I give 1 spoon, Bruno okay. If you give and he gets gas, stop.
Should I give grain-free food for allergy?
Not unless vet says wheat allergy. Most allergy is chicken, beef, dairy – not grain. Rice is actually easiest grain for sensitive stomach. Grain-free with too much pea can cause heart problem in big dogs if given for years. So stick to rice or oatmeal based unless allergy test says grain allergy.
Can I give raw food for sensitive stomach?
Vet said big no for sensitive stomach dogs. Raw is too rich, has bacteria, too much fat, causes more vomiting. For allergy dogs, you need controlled protein, raw is uncontrolled. First fix stomach with limited ingredient kibble, then later if you want you can add little cooked fresh food. But not raw when gut is already weak.
My dog eats grass and vomits, is that allergy?
Bruno did same. Vet said eating grass sometimes is normal – they eat to make themselves vomit when stomach feels acidic or gassy. If it’s once a week, okay. If it’s daily and poop is loose, then food doesn’t suit. Check food first. And deworm every 3 months, worms also cause grass eating and loose poop.
